Course Overview:

The purpose of this course is to give the student tools, information, and strategies to equip them  in a way that will give them the best chance of success when starting a business.  We will discuss topics such as risk, economics, the global market, ethics, legal considerations, organization, humans resources, and marketing. As a student reads, completes practices and assignments, discusses with others, and takes assessments, he or she will gain a practical understanding of the components of a small business and the steps that one takes to create and establish that business, from the idea, to the business plan, to the strategies for helping that business to succeed and grow.

HVACR Technicians are one of the most in demand jobs in the current job market, and the job opportunities are expected to continue growing over the next ten years.  HVAC Technicians install, inspect, repair and maintain heating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration systems for residential and commercial settings.  This course will provide the skills needed to obtain an entry-level position in the HVACR industry.  It can also be used to upgrade your skill set if you are already employed as an HVACR technician.  This course will provide a comprehensive overview of all aspects of HVACR, with the goal of preparing students to be able to install and maintain HVACR systems.  Students will learn through a combination of theoretical and practical applications so that they have a solid understanding of how HVACR systems work prior to entering the workforce.   Students will be prepared to obtain entry-level HVACR positions.  Students will also meet the basic requirements to sit for the North American Technician Excellence (NATE) national certification exam to become a Certified HVAC/R Technician, as well as begin working toward advanced level certifications.  Students will learn how to start their own independent consulting business and be prepared to comprehend entrepreneurship and opportunity, identify the steps for developing a business plan and marketing strategy, identify methods for managing costs and forming a financing strategy, comprehend commercial law and the importance of contracts, and identify strategies for growing a business and eventually selling it.

  • Explain the practices involved in refrigeration system installation, maintenance, and repair.

  • Identify the various types of heating systems and describe how to install, maintain, and repair them.
  • Identify heat pump systems and explain the process of installing, maintaining, and repairing them.
  • Identify the components of HVACR system design, sizing, sizing, and layout and describe the process involved.
  • Describe commercial environmental systems and identify how to install, maintain and repair them.
  • Describe commercial refrigeration systems and identify how to install, maintain, and repair them.
  • Describe the installation, maintenance, service, and troubleshooting processes.

ProTrain will provide Students who successfully complete their online certification programs and pass their industry level certification exams the access to the new ProTrain Education-2-Employment Career Tracker system. The Career Tracker will allow our students who pass exams to load their own resumes at no additional cost, and letting industry employers find their talent through the same database.

Willow Nolland is an expert in education and eLearning, with more than ten years of experience in curriculum development and instructional design. She has worked in higher education for over twelve years, and has developed numerous courses and has been involved in curriculum development across disciplines. She has experience with academic program development and coordination, curriculum development, student learning outcomes, educational partnerships, and student development. In addition, she has developed and administered professional development programs for various groups, including teachers, counselors, healthcare workers and members of private industry. She is a certified Quality Matters Reviewer and has taken graduate courses in online course development. She designs and teaches online courses at the college level and is proficient in a variety of course management systems. She has helped educators redesign their courses to transition them from a face-to-face format to an online format, and has provided course editing assistance to others. As a freelance instructional designer and curriculum developer, her projects have included course editing and redesign of online continuing education courses for nurses, CEU curriculum development for healthcare workers and teachers, and course review and editing for various colleges and universities.
