Course Overview:
In this course, we will explore the profession of medical assisting by looking at the role of the medical assistant, the importance of health records, and key terminology in the field. We will learn the fundamentals of medical assisting such as infection control and medical emergencies. Assisting with medications, helping with the different medical specialties, and working with the clinical lab are topics that will be explored.
This course will provide you with key information about medical terminology systems. You will learn the key elements used to build medical terms. This will help you be able to decipher words on your own. You will also review body structure and the main systems of the human body. In doing so, you will learn how to recognize, pronounce. build and spell words related to body structure. You will test your new knowledge throughout the course with activities and quizzes.

In this lesson, we will learn about medications. Principles of pharmacology, reading labels, pharmacy math, and types and methods of medication administration will all be covered.
Lesson 5: Assisting with Medical Specialties, Part 1
In this lesson, we will learn about the medical specialties that employ medical assistants. The basics of each field are covered, including ophthalmology, dermatology, allergy and infectious disease, gastroenterology, orthopedics, and physical medicine.

Medical Terminology Career Prep Curriculum:
Lesson 1: Basic Elements of a Medical Word
This lesson will help you be able to Identify the four-word elements used to build medical words. You will also learn how to divide medical words into their component parts and apply the basic rules to define and build medical words. You will learn how to interpret pronunciation marks so you can pronounce medical terms presented in this chapter.
Lesson 2: Suffixes and Prefixes
This lesson will show you how to identify examples of surgical, diagnostic, pathological, and related suffixes. You will learn how you can link combining forms and word roots to suffixes. You will define and provide surgical, diagnostic, pathological, and related suffixes. You will also learn how to define and provide adjective, noun, and diminutive suffixes. You will see how to locate and apply guidelines for pluralizing terms and define common prefixes used in medical terminology. You will see how a prefix changes the meaning of a medical word and learn to recognize and define prefixes of position, number and measurement, and direction.
Lesson 3: Body Structure
This lesson provides an orientation to the body as a whole and contains general terms that are relevant to all body systems. Learning these terms and how they are used to locate and describe structures within the body helps to master the material presented in subsequent chapters of this book. Included are terms associated with diseases, abnormal conditions, and diagnostic and med- ical procedures used in the clinical setting. Also, case studies provide prototypes for documenting health-care services in a patient’s electronic medical record.
